CCS Technical Workshop 2026, Tokyo, 21 January 2026

In Japan, the CCS Business Act was enacted in May 2024, and the environment for commercializing CCS is being established, including the acceleration of advanced CCS projects led by the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry (METI) and JOGMEC.

Geological Carbon Dioxide Storage Technology Research Association (GCS) is also advancing technological development essential for enhancing safety and reducing costs in CCS project deployment, as a commissioned project by the New Energy and Industrial Technology Development Organization (NEDO). Specifically, GCS is advancing field demonstrations of multi-sensing technology using optical fibers at actual sites and developing evaluation methods for the fault safety and integrity around CO₂ storage sites, receiving high recognition both domestically and internationally. Furthermore, it is engaged in research supporting CCS economic evaluation and policy development, such as building a "CO₂ Emission Source Database" and a "CCS Project Cost Estimation Tool."

This workshop will first introduce the past, present and future of Decatur, a large-scale CCUS project in Illinois, USA. Next, GCS will talk on its efforts and the role of R&D for CCS commercialization. Following this, the Energy and Environmental Research Center (EERC) at the University of North Dakota, which is conducting joint research with GCS, will introduce latest developments in large-scale CCS projects and the CCS commercialization in North Dakota, USA. Furthermore, JOGMEC will introduce cost reduction strategies for advancing CCS commercialization.

Additionally, a poster session and a networking reception will be held, providing opportunities for exchanging views with the invited speakers and researchers concerned.

We look forward to welcoming all those interested in the latest developments in CCS in Japan and overseas.
