CCS Technical Workshop 2024 - CCS Technology Development, Deployment and Commercialization in Japan - , Tokyo, 24 January 2024

We are pleased to announce that "GCS-RITE CCS Technical Workshop 2024" will take place on 24th January 2024 (JST, UTC+9), in Tokyo, Japan.

In the final summary of the "CCS Long-Term Roadmap" released by Japan's Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry (METI) in March 2023, CCS is considered to be an indispensable technology for achieving a stable energy supply and carbon neutrality in Japan, and with the aim of enabling CO2 storage of 120-240 Mtpa by 2050, it is indicated that business environment for starting of business by 2030 is to be prepared toward the full-scale start of CCS projects thereafter. In this context, concrete actions toward commercialization are shown and seven "advanced CCS projects" were selected as part of "governmental supports" in June 2023, in order to commence business operations of CCS by 2030.

Meanwhile, in terms of technological development, the roadmap specifies that future cost targets should be defined, and R&D and demonstration should be conducted to reduce costs. GCS-RITE is now driving the development of technologies for pursuing safety and monitoring-method of CCS with optical fiber sensing, for developing planning-method for improving CCS business profitability and for contributing to promote public understanding on CCS, under contract with the New Energy and Industrial Technology Development Organization (NEDO).

In this workshop, overseas leading experts will present to highlight their cutting-edge activities and experiences in CO2 geological storage, including collaboration with RITE, and their world-wide expertise on certification framework and practice of CCS projects. GCS-RITE's efforts to develop and demonstrate innovative CCS technologies will also be reported. We will also hold a poster session and a networking reception as opportunities to exchange opinions and have interactive discussions with the overseas speakers and our researchers. We look forward to welcoming you personally or virtually at the workshop.
