2016 CSLF Annual Meeting in Tokyo, Tokyo, 3-7 October 2016
RITE hosted the CSLF*1 Annual Meeting in conjunction with the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry (METI) in Tokyo from 3rd to 7th October 2016.
The CSLF Technical Group and Policy Group meetings were attended by about 50 participants from 15 member countries, respectively. The participants had active discussions and shared knowledge of the latest CCS-related developments there. In a series of the meetings, CSLF approved the Japan's Tomakomai CCS Demonstration Project as a CSLF-recognized project, recognizing that the project is capable of contributing to future deployment and advancement of CCS technology. In the Policy Group meeting, CSLF approved an application of the membership from Czech, which follows the new membership of Romania and Serbia approved a year ago. The recent expansion of CSLF is expected to revitalize its activities.
The technical workshop had the audience of 100 CCS stakeholders, including CSLF members and participants from Japanese companies and research institutes. The event had 12 presentations, which provided the participants with an opportunity of accessing latest information on CCS activities. The one-day site visit to the Tomakomai Demonstration Project was joined by 35 CSLF members from 10 countries. They had lively Q&As with guides from the project operator Japan CCS (JCCS), indicating their great interest in the full-chain project from capture to storage.
The host of the next meeting was not determined but it was agreed that the members will consider holding it somewhere in the Middle East.
*1 About CSLF
CSLF stands for the Carbon Sequestration Leadership Forum. The initiative was established under the initiative of the USA in June 2003 in order to promote international cooperation for research, development, demonstration and commercialization of CCUS. With the membership of Czech approved in the 2016 annual meeting in Tokyo, the number of the member states became 25 countries and one region (European Commission). Activities under CSLF are conducted by its Policy Group and Technical Group, Japanese members of which are METI and RITE, respectively. CSLF holds two meetings every year - a mid-year meeting and an annual meeting - and the meeting in Tokyo was an annual meeting.
