Welcome Address
On behalf of the Research Institute of Innovative Technology for the Earth, thank you for your continued support for RITE programs and initiatives.
As a key research institute promoting worldwide research and development for mitigation of global warming, RITE's mission encompasses carbon capture and storage (CCS), biofunctional engineering technologies, global warming mitigation scenarios, and a host of other promising developments.
I know you are all aware of the ongoing negotiations and efforts on different fronts to forge a new post-Kyoto framework to follow the current Kyoto Protocol commitment period to meet the challenge of global warming. At the same time, industries are stepping up efforts to devise effective global warming mitigation strategies to reach their long-term CO2 reduction targets by the year 2050.
This International Symposium will focus on the sectoral approach that was highlighted at the G8 Hokkaido Toyako Summit in July as being "a particularly promising stratagem for countries to achieve their carbon emissions targets." You will hear invited experts from Japan and around the world address the efficacy and challenges of the sectoral approach, global warming mitigation initiatives of different industries, and advance our understanding of how to deal with climate change.
We gratefully acknowledge the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry (METI) and the Kinki Regional Energy & Global Warming Mitigation Promotion Council for their supports for this symposium.
We hope to see you at this year's RITE International Symposium!
Yours sincerely,
Yoshihisa Akiyama
