ABSTRACT The purpose of research is to put the device to practical use to reduce the volume and quantity of discharged waste from households and offices. By reducing the volume and quantity of waste, an improvement in transport efficiency of waste, decrease in amount of garbage bags thrown away, and an improvement of the combustion efficiency in the incineration factory, and so on are done. Reducing the volume and quantity of waste from private sectors contributes to CO2 reduction. To reduce the volume and quantity of waste efficiently, and to reuse recyclable waste, we process combustible trash and garbage separately.
Considering future demands and efficient performance, we are focusing on developing devices for offices to reduce combustible trash and ones for households to reduce garbage.

(1) The volume reducing device for combustible trash from offices
This device was designed to compress trash in two-dimensional direction and the compression ratio has been optimized in consideration of the restoration of the trash. Then, efficient compressive force and a compression process were found from the relations of the compressive force with decrease rate. A trial product could achieve a target rate of volume reduction, which is about 1/7 at the case of paper shredder trash and about 1/10 at the case of wastepaper. And, how to pack it in smaller bags with restraining restoration of the trash after the discharge was established. Therefore, it is possible to work for reduction of the bags thrown away. From now on, a trial product will be improved, and a sample will be made. Then, a monitoring test concerning outside of the company is done to put the device to practical use.

(2) The volume and quantity reducing device for garbage from households
Though this device was to be realized by "the compression dehydration method", the basic method has been changed to "the crush dehydration method", because of the size and cost of the device. The process to attain the target reduction rate was established as a result of numbers of examinations by this method. The rate of volume reduction is 75% and the quantity reduction rate is 40% at the case of the standard composition garbage. From now on, a sample will be made, and a monitoring evaluation test outside of the company will be done to put the device to practical use.
